Diebold Flaws

E-voting flaws risk ballot fraud

This is huge news. This whole subject has been buzzing along on the grass-roots level for a while, but here it broke through to the media including the New York Times. This also came from the internet - it was one of those sites that everyone writes off as a conspiracy site that made the source code available, these scientists grabbed and analyzed the source code. A huge win for the internet.

I get nervous when we look to technology for answers. Clearly, more technology means more unpredicted problems or openings for corruption. In my opinion, no voting method has ever worked as well as the Winker, and we should stick with that. If it ain't broke...

(pasted from http://www.electionmethods.org/)

The Winker: An antiquated albeit uncorruptable voting method used in America during the 1920's. The method generally consisted of different middle-aged men (often named "Ted") standing in voting booths across the country. These men would be chosen at random by the U.S. Government, although middle-aged citizens could up their chances depending on the number of cereal-box tops they collected.

Voters across the country would enter the aforementioned booths one at a time, and interact with said "Teds." Although exact procedure would vary from county to county, usually the voter would signal the Ted as to his vote on a particular issue, blinking once for yes or twice for no.

The "Winker" system was a huge success, leading other nations around the world to follow in America's footsteps (although some British historians argue that the U.K. was using a similar system, "The Wanker", much earlier).

Nevertheless, the United Stated ceased use of The Winker Method by 1931, as it was found that Americans as a whole deeply love to punch holes into paper.
