A Theory:
So, 60 Minutes is prepared to run a devastating story on the Nigeria forgeries. The GOP gets worried about this, and enlists a GOP operative to dump inauthentic TANG documents on CBS. CBS runs with them instead, and conservatives jump on matters of typography with stunning speed. The GOP then pivots straight to attacking Dan Rather's credibility. So now CBS is sitting on this story that could be really damaging, because their credibility is unfairly damaged.Just a theory. A bit tin-foil hat, but there is that GOP operative that refuses to deny he was the source of the memos.
